02 / Market comparison
United States or Germany?
Which market should a team investigate first for the same desk organizer?
Demonstration · Synthetic inputs. Every commercial price, cost and volume below is hypothetical. Computed figures are arithmetic on those inputs, not observed market facts or forecasts.
Official sources provide selected context and the calculation method. This is an authored example, not a client report or a live analysis run.
Conclusion under these assumptions
Investigate the US pilot first under these assumptions. Germany’s thin assumed contribution makes that version more fragile; this is not a ranking of real market attractiveness.
What to do
Validate the US price and acquisition cost first. In parallel, obtain German net-price, fulfillment, returns and compliance quotes before allocating a German launch budget.
Key evidence
Computed demonstration, conditional on synthetic inputs.
- US: $10.00 contribution per order and 50 orders to cover $500.00 fixed cost.
- Germany: €2.00 contribution per order and 350 orders to cover €700.00 fixed cost.
- The German version has only €2.00 per order of cost headroom. A €2.00 variable-cost increase removes its positive contribution entirely.
What this does not establish
- Every price and cost is synthetic, including the difference between countries. No measured demand, supplier quote, return rate or customer-acquisition evidence supports a country preference.
- USD and EUR stay in their own columns; no exchange-rate assumption or direct cash-profit comparison is made. Break-even order counts describe these offers, not relative consumer demand.
- Net prices exclude indirect tax. Tax, customs, product safety, packaging obligations, language, owner pay, other overhead and cash timing require separate validation. Selected consumer rules below are not a complete launch checklist.
When to revisit
- Rebuild both columns from dated local quotes and customer tests using the same cost definitions and planning period.
- If Germany’s measured net contribution or fixed launch requirements improve, rerun the order hurdle before making a market decision.
- Check current local selling obligations and the actual audience in each country before accepting orders; the withdrawal rule is not a return-rate estimate.
Inputs and calculations
One order contains one unit. The planning window is a synthetic 45-day pilot; fixed costs cover that entire window. All per-order costs are held constant, with no capacity step, discounts or repeat-purchase effects.
| Input | United States (USD) | Germany (EUR) |
|---|---|---|
| Net selling price | $48.00 | €45.00 |
| Landed product | $16.00 | €16.00 |
| Packaging | $2.00 | €2.00 |
| Fulfillment and outbound shipping | $5.00 | €8.00 |
| Payment processing | $2.00 | €2.00 |
| Expected returns and damage allowance | $3.00 | €5.00 |
| Customer acquisition per order | $10.00 | €10.00 |
| Fixed cost for the whole pilot | $500.00 | €700.00 |
| Market | Variable cost / order | Contribution / order | Whole orders to cover fixed cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $38.00 | $10.00 | 50 |
| Germany | €43.00 | €2.00 | 350 |
These columns are two hypothetical local offers, not the same price converted into another currency. Neither the German cost premium nor the relative customer-acquisition cost is a measured fact. Adding €2.00 to Germany’s €43.00 variable cost makes contribution zero at its €45.00 net price.
Method and rounding
Variable cost is the sum of the six listed per-order components. Contribution per order = net price − variable cost. Break-even orders = fixed cost ÷ positive contribution, rounded up to a whole order. Result at a given volume = orders × contribution − listed fixed cost.
At zero or negative contribution there is no finite break-even for the positive fixed costs here. Prices and costs are stored and computed as integer cents; the display uses two decimals. SBA describes the single-product break-even method.
The returns allowance is an assumed expected cost per original order, not a return-rate estimate. The model assumes it captures lost revenue and net reverse-logistics costs; replace it with consistent actual cohort data, avoiding double counting.

Withdrawal rights when shopping onlineConsumers generally have a 14-day withdrawal right for online purchases, subject to exceptions. Goods normally start that period on receipt.
Scope limit: The right does not specify a return rate or return cost. It does not justify the example’s larger German allowance. Check applicable current rules before selling.
